Three Thousand Years of Longing is a visually stunning journey into the heartbreaking life of a genie. For those who love magic, you’ll be in for a treat in Three Thousand Years of Longing. The film is full of mystical elements and mostly tells the truth from fairy tales. That being said, Three Thousand Years of Longing isn’t what the trailer promised. What most viewers were looking for was an adventure tale of two protagonists, and this is one that focuses primarily on the Genie (played by Idris Elba). This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it does come as a bit of a shock.

Alithea (Tilda Swinton) finds a bottle, and while cleaning it, she accidentally releases a genie who tells her you can make three wishes. The elf explains how he was imprisoned in the bottle, Alithea fell in love with the story, and wished the elf to fall in love with herself so that she would never be alone…

Genie is the protagonist of the film, and while it’s easy to empathize with him and feel sorry for him, his relationship with Alithea feels grudging. The first half uses a flashback structure to insert the bud of love into the development process of the story, with both Hongdae’s boldness and deep tenderness. Let the audience understand the essence of love, some kind of imagination and expectation for the story. And the second half returns to the normal sequence and becomes protracted, especially near the end. By the end of the story, many viewers will unfortunately lose interest in Alithea.

Alithea, a British lady who traveled to Istanbul for a conference, has spent her life creating stories, her profession is the study of mythology and symbolism. When she meets a genie, her worldview is challenged. It’s a typical fantasy scenario, and all stories about making a wish are a “cautionary tale.”

Elf’s life is full of false wishes, caught in a cycle of heartbreak, disappointment, and disappearance into the ages. With Alithea, he hopes to finally break this cycle and gain a chance at freedom. As the two talk, both understand that finding each other’s true desires isn’t as easy as the story says.

George Miller and screenwriter Augusta Gore set a seemingly challenging task for setting the framework for a given story. From the fantastical exploration of the long life history of elves in the human world, and everything between Alithea and elves, it all ultimately has to be intertwined to express what it means to be what you really want. In this delicate tightrope walk, the film also has to balance action, romance, humor, and heartache in a relatively tight, under two-hour run. It’s no wonder that some elements of the story feel a little lacking.

The story goes in so many different directions that it can’t help getting stretched in places when George Miller tries to make his point, with the laconic narrative of films like the director’s (Mad Max: Fury Road) A sharp contrast was formed.
